Withlacoochee
Withlacoochee Wetland Mitigation Bank encompasses more than 700 acres and has been an ongoing project since 2009. The goal is to restore native plant communities and their associated hydrologic regimes, increase the hydrologic function for on-site wetlands, and restore wildlife habitat usage by increasing biological diversity for the bank.
Hilochee
Hilochee Mitigation Bank is 875 acres of previously undeveloped land in the Withlacoochee River Basin in Polk County, Florida. The site was an active sand mine which resulted in a 113 acre lake and a 47 acre clay pit. EC&D’s plan is to restore the wetland hydrology that was impacted by mining and place a conservation easement on the entire site. The Hilochee Mitigation Bank will be the only bank within the Withlacoochee River Basin to yield herbaceous wetland credits.
Southport
Southport Mitigation Bank is a 3,280 acre site located in the south-central portion of Osceola County. The site is home to a variety of habitat communities and provides vital recharge functions for the Florida Aquifer, Reedy Creek Swamp, and Kissimmee Chain of Lakes. The project site will receive hydrologic and vegetative enhancement to ensure that the vegetation community will continue to thrive.
Green Swamp
Green Swamp Mitigation Bank includes approximately 6300 acres and is located within the Green Swamp Region of northern Polk County. Much of the site consists of a large forested basin swamp system that was historically by-passed by the Smokey Sutton Canal. As a result of the former hydrological modifications, the climax community had begun to shift from a basin swamp to a bay swamp. With EC&D’s efforts, connectivity has been reestablished between the forested basin swamp and the Smokey Sutton Canal to allow the water to move freely in and out of the basin. The ultimate goal of this project is to create a cypress dominant basin swamp.
